Reading is Humbling
I began to read, which led me to start wondering. Just in the past year or two, I’ve started enjoying reading. This is definitely because I am chasing the urge for more knowledge. I want to understand so many things that only a book can teach me. And that’s when I came to the realization that I am striving to become something. I’m not sure what I’m striving to become or what I’m chasing, but something inside me is pushing me to want to learn more. Learn more beyond the classroom, beyond society, beyond the physicality of humans themselves. I think spiritually, I am eager to learn more.
Reading has slowed me down. I’m a very intense person, and that is the main thing I am working on right now in my life. Reading is the one thing that allows me to not have to feel anything. Feelings just flow. I don’t have to feel the urge to create, read a certain amount, think certain thoughts, make notes, or reflect. I can just read and consume. But I have noticed that reading has naturally brought me more peace. I don’t always take reading literally; sometimes I just read. I’m not afraid to read anything!
I think that’s why, in our society, I believe everyone should read. You don’t have to read a level 100 book with 1,000 pages— even just a magazine. But when it comes to literature or writing written by someone else, you don’t get to pick what was written. Instead, you get to consume. It instills boundaries and a natural trust between human beings. I believe we are so afraid to truly listen to one another or follow someone because of things they believe in or say. We want to hide and hide and hide. We don’t consume with caution because we assume that the minute we consume, we become. But you are in control.
I write and share my life because I hope that I may be able to inspire one of you, or just share love with someone who needs it. I don’t write to influence; I share because I genuinely believe we need more of it! Culture is so important to me, and I believe by writing and sharing my life and my view on culture, I can help build it.
It’s crazy how you can read a book about fashion, and it may spark your imagination or interest in a whole different conversation. THAT is the power of reading. To me, I see it as the basis of wisdom and creativity.
